What saffron is used for? Is saffron from Iran?

Saffron is an amazing spice that is very expensive and has a specific taste and aroma. It is used in many food recipes. Iran is the largest producer of saffron worldwide, supplying over 90% of the global demand. Iranian saffron is also renowned for its superior quality.

Saffron is used in many Iranian dishes and drinks like saffron tea or Sholezard. Sometimes this stunning spice is used as a garnish in Iranian recipes, for example, saffron rice which is a famous traditional garnish for several dishes.

In general, the age and history of saffron production in Iran can be considered to be about 3 thousand years. Some historical sources mention that saffron is five thousand years old in Iran During the Assyrian era, a botanical book documented details about the saffron flower.

It may not be possible to name an exact date for the age of saffron in Iran. But for sure, Iran was one of the first origins of saffron in the world.

In this article, I will guide you through the process of brewing saffron and share some interesting recipes that incorporate saffron.

In the first step of brewing saffron, pour the saffron flower stigmas into your mortar. Grind until the saffron is powdered.

Pour ground saffron in a small cup or teapot. Put ice or very little hot water in the small cup or teapot, we want to shock saffron, so we either use hot water or ice for brewing saffron.

Cover your small cup or teapot especially when you use hot water to brew the saffron. Let sit that until the saffron brews and reach a beautiful yellow color.

Now! your saffron is brewed and you can use it in many different recipes.

Many Iranian traditional dishes are cooked or garnished with saffron. Some of the recipes are custom like garnishing rice with saffron. Or some of them are beneficial for health like saffron milk.
